Co-parenting has become increasingly more common with a divorce rate in the United States at 50%, many parents now have no choice but to co-parent with their ex-partner for their children’s benefit. In many cases, the practicalities of co-parenting can be extremely difficult and lead into hostile situations but one mother has shown that it doesn’t have to have a stigma of being challenging.

Brittney Johnson of Missouri took to Facebook to describe how her ex-boyfriend, Charlie Swarzentruber’s, new girlfriend has been an amazing help and influence on her child. Johnson wrote that the girlfriend, Kayla Imhoff, “has been a gift of so much more than I could have hoped for.”

She continued in praising her, adding “Thank you Kayla for showing Payton how to chase her dreams, how to work hard and stay up late to study for a test. Thank you for still making time to ride her bike with her and make her mac and cheese even in one of the stressful times of your life. You’re a true role model and an amazing bonus mom and we are so proud of you.”

In response to her kind words, Kayla commented “I appreciate that she appreciates me so much. She doesn’t have to do that and she does. That’s what makes our relationship so special” Although there seems to be a lot of admiration between the parents, the initial stages of the relationship were quite the opposite.

Swarzentruber added that although there was some clear tension in the beginning, the two decided to put their differences aside and work together. He said “I’m just glad that these two get along and love my little girl the way they do, they help me a lot. That’s for sure.” Johnson’s Facebook post went viral, reaching over 100,000 likes and 50,000 shares.

As for her advice to others in the same situation, she said “See that person as a potential teammate of yours instead of competition, with me and Kayla, we’re on the same team. We’re on Payton’s team.”
