Hope Holland thought she would never see her son again after his father fled with him to Mexico when he was only three-years-old – But then the unthinkable happened.
After spotting a familiar picture on social media, Hope had found new hope. She herself had taken that very picture – it was of her two young sons in a bathtub together. The picture was taken all the way back in the year 2000.
When Jonathan turned 18, he posted the photo of him and his brother, hoping that by some miracle his mother or older brother, Jacob, might see it. It was a long shot, but he had to cling on to hope if he wanted to reunite with his family.
It was at that very moment Hope stayed true to her name and put her mind to contacting whoever uploaded that photo. Looking through the person who posted the picture’s Facebook page, Hope found herself shaking, overwhelmed with emotion.
“I scrolled through picture after picture, crying,” she said as she looked at his other photos from a life with him she’d missed out on. “It was like flashes of little movie trailers, giving me insight to pieces of his life.”
After missing her son terribly for 15 years, Hope had finally found him on the internet. Looking through some of his other Facebook posted pictures, there was no room for error – this was her son.
“Tears uncontrollably fell down my face, my hands were shaking, my body was shaking,” she wrote later on a GoFundMe page that she had set up to take care of all of the expenses involved in bringing Jonathan back to the U.S.
Jonathan was reunited with Hope and Jacob last week. The minute he spotted his mother, he ran into her arms and was welcomed with a long overdue embrace. Jonathan plans to move home to Campbell after he graduates from high school in Mexico next spring.
