“One of my very first memories is of being 3 years old and standing up in front of my pre-school class, declaring that I would marry her someday,” writes Matt via the Instagram account called The Way We Met.
Initially meeting in the same pre-school, Matt Grodsky and Laura Scheeler felt like the best of friends from the start. They clicked almost instantly, which pushed Matt to admit in front of their whole class that – despite their age – he knows he is going to marry Laura someday.
They were both only three years old, but Matt just knew he was going to spend the rest of his life with buddy Laura, no matter what it takes.
“Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the ‘right way’ to properly eat string cheese. We have fond memories of playing hide-and-go-seek, chasing after each other on the playground, and mischievously staying up during nap time.”
Unfortunately, the two drifted apart once hitting age 6 as they began to have different interests and friends. No longer would they meet and play, as their connection felt less natural than it did before.
“Eventually, we lost touch upon entering our Elementary School days and for the next seven years, our family’s annual Christmas cards was the only way we ever saw each other’s faces,” says Matt.
It was only years later that Laura decided to reach out when she spotted Matt’s number in a mutual friend’s phone. Curious with his whereabouts and how life has treated him, Laura asked her friend to set her up with that long lost pre-school friend of hers.
It didn’t take long – after exchanging a few words on the phone, it became evident that nothing has changed and the two were meant to be together. Only two short weeks later, Matt and Laura were dating.
Although their connection was growing stronger than ever, there were still obstacles they needed to overcome if they wanted this relationship to work in the long run. Laura and Matt were attending different high school and, later on, different colleges as well. This meant long distance was in order, but it didn’t matter. They were both fully committed to the relationship and were willing to work hard for it to thrive into what it is today.
It was May 2015, and after dating for several years, Matt decided to take Laura on a picnic date to show her just how serious he is about their relationship. Being the romantic that he is, he told Laura to meet him in front of the preschool where they first met.
Then, he got down on one knee and announced he was keeping the promise he made 20 years ago – he wants to marry Laura and stand by her, in sickness and in health, as long as they both shall live.
“I was enamored with Laura as a child,” says Matt, “and I still am to this day.”
And just like that, the two walked down the aisle and were officially married in December this past year.
