We are constantly mesmerized by the actions of young children, but after Kenyatta Lewis saw her daughter’s act of kindness for a homeless man, she learned how selfless children could really be.
Kenyatta was leaving a store in Virginia on July 10th alongside her daughter, Janiyah, when they passed a homeless man who was crying.
At this moment, six-year-old, Janiyah, turned to her mom and said the man might be “hot and thirsty,” and her instinct was to then approach him. Kenyatta shared this story on her Facebook page after she was moved by her young daughter’s actions.
On her post, she stated that Janiyah asked the man why he was sitting on a dirty ground rather than going home. It was then that Jeniyah learned that the man was homeless, and the moment that followed is what really moved her mother and made her “stop and think.”
Janiyah had given the stranger a few dollars to go and spend in McDonald’s and later learned why the man was homeless.
“We had a small conversation and he explained his trailer burnt down and he lost everything including his wife,” Kenyatta said. “I felt for him.”
Fortunately, after Janiyah spread her act of kindness, the man’s “whole face lit up” and, “he even commented on how surprised he was to see all of this coming from a 6-year-old.”
Many others were also moved by the actions of the young six-year-old, and the Facebook post had more than 200,000 shares in less than a week. Thanks to the reception the post received, Kenyatta and her daughter decided to set up a GoFundMe campaign, and their page hoped to raise donations of food, water, clothes, and shoes to give to people in need.
Since starting the page, the mother-daughter duo has already exceeded their $1,000 goal.
Kenyatta was a very proud mother and thanked everyone on Facebook for sharing her post. She was proud to share the story of her “amazing daughter” and felt “so very blessed.”
She continued to express, “I always knew she was a special kind of child but now the world will know.”
