Professionally, Meghan Markle may be best known for her portrayal as Rachel Zane in the popular series, Suits, but her recent romance with the Prince of England is sure to keep her in the headlines. But just how did the lovebirds get together?
Having been photographed with the Prince of England, there was no denying the two were romantically linked. However, after the news became public, Meghan admitted that the loved up pair had in fact been secretly dating before the world found out.
Her Knight In Shining Armor
Beginning from July 2016, the union of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry led to a media frenzy of constant speculation before an official statement was released in November, confirming the romance. Meghan has since admitted that the actress and her royal beau had been secretly dating for six months before it was revealed to the public. During an interview with Vanity Fair in September 2017, Markle spoke about her relationship for the first time and expressed, “We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”
Friends In Great Places
So, where did it all begin for the actress and her royal beau? In fact, the pair share a mutual friend, Markus Anderson, who works as a consultant for the Soho House Group, and is one of Meghan’s closest friends. After the couples initial meeting, it was reported that Harry was texting Meghan, and the pair eventually met up on her visit to London. Other than Soho House, the pair met and continued to enjoy low-key dates from July 2016.
While rumors began to swirl in the media about the romance between the pair, eagle-eyed social media followers caught onto Meghan’s Instagram post where she showed off her matching beaded bracelet to the one Harry was photographed wearing. Giving the post their undivided attention, fans saw that the photograph was originally taken during a trip to Soho Farmhouse in the Oxfordshire countryside, where the two had been previously linked. A photograph soon followed of Meghan wearing a necklace with the initials “H” and “M.”
Being A Prince Has Its Perks
While these were subtle hints that led to speculation, Harry and Meghan found many ways where they could get away with seeing each other without being caught. After all, Harry is a Prince, and his options are pretty unlimited. It was reported that he took a 1,700 mile detour to Canada from Barbados to see his girlfriend, and also organized a private jet to pick up Meghan and bring her to London without photographers capturing her in the airport at check-in or baggage claim.
Enough Is Enough
It was on November 8th, 2016, that an official statement was released from the Royal Family’s secretary confirming the couple’s relationship. The statement was in fact issued due to the “wave of abuse and harassment” directed toward Harry’s “girlfriend.” While the statement confirmed that Markle was, in fact, the Prince’s girlfriend, the message was released to ask the press to “pause and reflect” before issuing their sexist and racist stories on the romance, as they were heavily defamatory towards Markle.
Show Business Is In Her Genes
While lunches at Buckingham Palace were probably not always on her bucket list growing up, she was always destined for show business. Her father, Thomas Markle, worked as a television lighting director on shows including Married…With Children, and Meghan was a regular visitor on set. She also majored in theater studies at Northwestern University, a degree she has certainly put to great use since. She did, however, also study International Relations which allowed her to live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a year.
Being A Biracial Actress
It wasn’t always easy to reach her goal of becoming an actress, with racial struggles being a constant issue for the aspiring star. In an article written by Meghan for Elle, she expressed her identity and acceptance struggles that she experienced in the industry. She wrote, “I wasn’t black enough for the black roles and I wasn’t white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn’t book a job.”
Proud Of Her Roots
Meghan spoke to Elle magazine in 2015 about being “half black and half white” and continued to express how she eventually found her voice as a mixed race woman. She stated, “while my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”
It’s All In The Writing
As a struggling actress, she found different ways in making money while interviewing at the same time. During this time, Meghan had normal jobs just like us. The humble girlfriend of a royal Prince wasn’t always on our TV screens, and claimed, “I used to be a calligrapher, that’s how I paid my bills!” In fact, Meghan was very good at her career as a freelance calligrapher, and was honored the role for celebrity wedding invites. “I did Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s wedding. I’ve done tons of celebrity correspondence.”
Deal Or No Deal?
Before becoming Rachel Zane, you may have recognized Meghan on another TV show. For a brief time while trying to secure her big break, Meghan was the “briefcase model” on the well-known game show, Deal or No Deal. Only featuring on the 2006 season of the U.S. hit show, Meghan later confessed to Esquire: “I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down.”
Just Find Her On Google
Meghan overcame racial stereotypes in the industry and became one of the most successful actresses, landing a huge role in Suits as Rachel Zane. On top of this, she became the most Googled actress of 2016. Her relationship with Prince Harry becoming public at the end of the year may have had a part to play in obtaining this title, but beating the likes of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence is definitely an achievement. Meghan Markle is for sure a hot topic, and her acting skills cannot be denied.
Apart from acting, and dating the Prince of England, Meghan is known for her passion about the adoption of dogs. Rumor has it, it was actually comedian Ellen DeGeneres who convinced Markle to adopt her first dog, and since that time she has become the owner of two more furry friends. She is often posting photos of her pups with the caption #AdoptDontShop. For a woman who has a lot on her plate, she still has time to spend with her cute little puppies.
In addition to acting, Meghan has many hobbies up her sleeve. She has often discussed her passion for yoga, and this became a hobby of hers from a young age. “Yoga is my thing,” she said. “My mom is a yoga instructor, and I started doing mommy-and-me yoga with her when I was seven.” She also likes to write and even had her own lifestyle blog called, “The Tig” where she wrote about all things fashion, beauty and food. However, Markle decided to shut down her blog in 2017.
A Young Writer
She took her writing skills upon her at the tender age of 11 to write a letter to the First Lady at the time, Hilary Clinton, on the subject of feminism. She said she had seen a soap advertisement that was evidently sexist, as it implied that women belonged in the kitchen. A topic of the moment, Meghan was clearly a young feminist advocate who didn’t like the oppression of women in any form. Fair play to her, she became a woman with a highly successful career!
Meghan is a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada, and in 2016, she visited Rwanda to see the work that had been done as a result of humanitarian efforts. It was after seeing how the work had successfully given a school in Rwanda access to clean water, that she wanted to achieve more. She has stated that one of her goals as Global Ambassador is to help more communities improve their quality of life, and build wells in these communities for more clean water.
She Has A Special Nickname
She may be known as Rachel, Meghan or Rachel Meghan, but she has admitted she has several nicknames alongside this. While the world may know her best by her characters name, those closest to her refer to her with something slightly different. On her lifestyle blog, she shared, “My nickname is: Meg, MM, M&M, and Flower (which my mom has called me since I was little).” We wonder which one the Prince chooses to go with, or maybe he has his own!
Before Prince Harry There Was Another Man
Meghan is actually a divorcee after marrying producer Trevor Engelson in 2011 and divorcing him in August 2013. Meghan and Trevor started dating in 2004 and later got married in a barefoot ceremony at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios in 2011. Their marriage was only to last two years before calling it quits. Rumor has it, Engleson is now allegedly producing a British TV show about a divorced woman who marries a British Prince. We wonder where he got that idea for a storyline from?
Facing All Types Of Challenges
Dating a guy who is sixth in line to be the King of England is no easy task. Meghan has spoken about her feelings towards her new romance, admitting, “Some days it can feel more challenging than others. And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.” If anyone can do it, Meghan is the woman for the job!
The One Thing She Can’t Live Without
If you were to be asked what is the one thing you can’t live without, you’d probably respond with your favorite food. But not for Meghan. Although a foodie herself, she says the one thing she can’t live without is her passport! She explained, “I spend almost every week on a plane, and between travel for work, or press, or most importantly for humanitarian work, it is my access to experience this big beautiful world of ours.” We could all only wish to experience the same type of endless travel.
Friends In High Places
One of Meghan’s close pals is tennis champion Serena Williams. After meeting at a celebrity flag football game, the two powerful women immediately hit it off. Meghan is often seen at Serena’s tennis matches, and after Serena won the U.S. Open title for the third year in a row, Meghan tweeted her support. Markle has since described Williams as a ‘confidante’ and ‘the down to earth chick’ she loves to spend time with. A true friendship right from the beginning!
Many people question whether her mother, Doria Ragland, is really her biological mother. In an interview with Ebony, Markle said, “My mom is a yoga instructor, 100% Black with dreadlocks. And when people find out ‘that girl’ on Suits is her daughter, there is often this disconnect and sometimes disbelief. It took me a long time to find myself.” Nevertheless, Meghan is very close with her mother, and she allegedly recently took her on a trip to London, no doubt paying someone a very special visit.
She Is Quite The Cook
Before she was being served scones and tea in the royal houses, Meghan proved she could cook up quite a storm. Recipes were a huge part of her blog, “The Tig,” and her food pictures sure looked appetizing. So when she’s not busy portraying the beautiful Rachel Zane on Suits, or traveling the globe for humanitarian work and saving impoverished communities, she’s in the kitchen cooking. Her favorite dish to make is roasted chicken, often bringing one with her to dinner-parties that she’s invited to.
Works For What She Believes In
Markle, being a woman of many talents, was the first in her family to graduate from school. During her senior year, she also worked for the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires. Reflecting on that time, she said it “helped my decision to work on women’s political participation and leadership. It’s a space I feel comfortable in and am really excited about the future of.” Since then, she has become an advocate for the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
Hitting The Small Screen
Before Suits, Meghan had smaller television roles. Her first TV role was in 2002 on an episode of the medical drama General Hospital. This was followed by roles in CSI, Without A Trace, and Castle, before starring in three major films: Get Him To The Greek and Remember Me in 2010, and Horrible Bosses in 2011. In 2011, she got her breakthrough role in Suits. Markle is passionate about her character, as she believes Rachel Zane is a true “role model” for having such a successful career.
Keeping The Wardrobe Vegan
Roast chicken may be her go-to dish, but when it comes to Meghan’s wardrobe choices, she opts for the vegan type. In an interview with Good Housekeeping, Meghan spoke about her clothing on Suits – “My wardrobe for my part in Suits isn’t like Working Girl – dressing for work doesn’t have to be so on-the-nose these days. The key is to have your own point of view attached to it. Personally, I love cropped pants in vegan leather, a great fitted blazer and a button-down [shirt].”
A Bit Of Birthday Love
Before shutting down her blog, Meghan would pen down a letter every year on her birthday for her site. The 36-year-old previously admitted, “My 20’s were brutal – a constant battle with myself, judging my weight, my style, my desire to be as cool/as hip/as smart/as “whatever” as everyone else.” She finally felt happy in her 30’s when she turned 34, and a year later she expressed, “I am feeling so incredibly joyful right now, so grateful and content that all I could wish for is more of the same.”
A fashion blog called, “Meghan’s Mirror” was created by Amanda Dishaw and Christine OBrien-Ross as a platform to document every outfit Meghan wears. The blog gives an insight into what the actress was most recently spotted wearing, where she bought it, and where they can get it for themselves. The pair created this blog following their original success with their first blog, “What Would Kate Do?,” and knew the market out there was keen to get the fashion insight from the new women in the royal circle.
The Value Of Money
The successful actress was not always so successful in keeping up with her funds. Making the confession in her blog, Markle admittedly discusses her struggles with money before fame, but how she still kept a smile on her face. “It wasn’t long ago (about ten years ago ) that I only had $40 in my bank account, that I could barely book an audition, and that my circle of friends was even smaller. But even then, without all the pomp and circumstance, I made time to celebrate my life.”
Life In Canada
While she hasn’t made the big move across the pond to live in England, she has moved from Los Angeles to Toronto where her show, Suits, is filmed. She is seen to live a low-key life in Canada, but she has had a royal visitor to her house, which is located in a quiet area. Expectedly, this would have caused a bit more chaos than the neighbors are normally used to, but the pair decided to spend their time together indoors the whole time!
Your Royal Highness
Without trying to jump to any conclusions, but with their growing love for one another, there is no reason not to suspect Prince Harry may propose to Meghan in the future. If he were to do so than Markle would become a Duchess of England after they wed. The current titles on offer are Sussex, Clarence, and Buckingham. So watch out, there may just be Duchess Meghan one day. We wonder what will come of Rachel Zane if this will happen?
Sisters Know Best
While the world awaits the next expected royal engagement, a family member of Meghan’s has something else to say on the topic of the Prince planning to propose. Meghan’s half-sister, Samantha Grant, is the 52-year-old daughter from Meghan’s father’s first marriage and spoke to Good Morning Britain about her famous half-sibling. She stated the public would be “surprised” by Meghan’s true character if she were to wed Prince Harry and become a member of the royal family.
The Perfect Match
She continued to tell the television hosts, “She’s very strong, she’s very worldly and educated, graceful, I think she will absolutely be a compliment to her role and I think the public will be surprised by how graceful and lovely she is.” Samantha also spoke of how the pair were a perfect match, highlighting that “together she and Prince Harry can bring so much to their role in humanitarian efforts and I think the world will be surprised – they’re both incredible people with a lot to offer.”
There are certain guidelines and rules the royal family has had to follow for years in regards to their relationship choices, and Prince Harry’s newest love interest does not tick all the boxes as a royal suitor. Historically, the Royals have not been allowed to marry divorcees, and as we know, the Suits actress has previously been married. However, in recent years, the Royal Family have shifted and modernized their attitudes on this topic, and even Harry’s father, Prince Charles, was permitted to marry divorcée Camilla Parker Bowles.
Asking For Approval
Although she is dating Harry, and things seem to be very serious, Meghan will have no place at the Christmas table at the Royal’s dinner at Sandringham until a proposal happens and the two are officially engaged. Additionally, the Prince would have to get an official approval from the Queen before choosing to propose. Of course, the Prince doesn’t just have his grandmother to ask but also has to contend with the traditional task of asking his girlfriend’s father for his daughter’s hand in marriage.
The Other Man In Her Life
While Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, would be expected to walk his daughter down the aisle on her big wedding day, he has chosen to remain out of the limelight while the world watches his beloved daughter’s relationship blossom. Nevertheless, it has been reported that the former lighting director is very happy with his daughter and her relationship, and like her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., told reporters: “She was a princess long before she met Harry. She was Daddy’s princess.”
