From Suits To Royal Suitor: Who Is Meghan Markle?

Meghan Markle may be best known for her portrayal as Rachel Zane in the popular series, Suits, but her recent romance with the Prince of England is sure to make Meghan Markle a name everyone is going to get to know.

Rachel, Is That You?

While she may be making her way across international headlines, the successful actress was not always destined for English royalty. Meghan was born in Los Angeles, and her real name is actually Rachel, with Meghan being her middle name! She obviously can’t escape that one.

Show Business Is In Her Genes

While lunches at Buckingham Palace were probably not always on her bucket list growing up, she was always destined for show business. Her father, Thomas Markle, worked as a television lighting director on shows including Married… With Children, and Meghan was a regular visitor on set. She also majored in theater studies at Northwestern University, a degree she has certainly put to great use since. She did, however, also study International Relations which allowed her to live in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for a year.

Being A Biracial Actress

It wasn’t always easy to reach her goal of becoming an actress, with racial struggles being a constant issue for the aspiring star. In an article written by Meghan for Elle, she expressed her identity and acceptance struggles that she experienced in the industry. She wrote, “I wasn’t black enough for the black roles and I wasn’t white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn’t book a job.”

Proud Of Her Roots

Meghan spoke to Elle magazine in 2015 about being “half black and half white” and continued to express how she eventually found her voice as a mixed race woman. She stated, “while my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that. To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

It’s All In The Writing

As a struggling actress, she found different ways in making money while interviewing at the same time. During this time, Meghan had normal jobs just like us! The humble girlfriend of a royal Prince wasn’t always on our television screens, and claimed, “I used to be a calligrapher, that’s how I paid my bills!” In fact, Meghan was very good at her career as a freelance calligrapher, and was honored the role for celebrity wedding invites. “I did Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s wedding. I’ve done tons of celebrity correspondence.”

Deal Or No Deal?

Before becoming Rachel Zane, you may have recognized Meghan on another TV show. For a brief time while trying to secure her big break, Meghan was the “briefcase model” on the well-known game show, Deal or No Deal. Only featuring on the 2006 season of the U.S. hit show, Meghan later confessed to Esquire: “I would end up standing up there forever in these terribly uncomfortable and inexpensive five-inch heels just waiting for someone to pick my number so I could go and sit down.”

Just Find Her On Google

Meghan overcame racial stereotypes in the industry and became one of the most successful actresses, landing a huge role in Suits as Rachel Zane. On top of this, she became the most googled actress of 2016. Her relationship with Prince Harry becoming public at the end of the year may have had a part to play in obtaining this title, but beating the likes of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence is definitely an achievement. Meghan Markle is for sure a hot topic, and her acting skills cannot be denied.

Furry Friends

Away from acting, and dating the Prince of England, Meghan is passionate about the adoption of dogs. Rumor has it, it was actually comedian Ellen DeGeneres who convinced Markle to adopt her first dog, and since that time she has become the owner of two more furry friends. She is often posting photos of her pups with the caption #AdoptDontShop. For a woman who has a lot on her plate, she still has time to spend with her cute little puppies.

Bending Backwards

Alongside acting, Meghan has many hobbies up her sleeve. She has often stated her passion for yoga, and this became a hobby of hers from a young age. “Yoga is my thing,” she said. “My mom is a yoga instructor, and I started doing mommy-and-me yoga with her when I was seven.” She also likes to write and even had her own lifestyle blog called, ‘The Tig,’ where she wrote about all things fashion, beauty and food. However, Markle decided to shut down her blog in 2017.

A Young Writer

She took her writing skills upon her at the tender age of 11 to write a letter to the First Lady at the time, Hilary Clinton, on the subject of feminism. She said she had seen a soap advertisement that was evidently sexist, as it implied that women belonged in the kitchen. A topic of the moment, Meghan was clearly a young feminist advocate who didn’t like the oppression of women in any form. And fair play to her, she became a woman with a highly successful career!

Humanitarian Work

Meghan became the Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada, and in 2016 she visited Rwanda to see the work that had been done as a result of humanitarian efforts. It was after seeing how the work had successfully given a school in Rwanda access to clean water, that she wanted to achieve more. She has stated that one of her goals as Global Ambassador is to help more communities improve their quality of life, and build wells in these communities for more clean water.

She Has A Special Nickname

She may be known as Rachel, Meghan or Rachel Meghan, but she has admitted she has several nicknames alongside this. While the world may know her best by her characters name, those closest to her refer to her with something slightly different. On her lifestyle blog, she shared, “My nickname is: Meg, MM, M&M, and Flower (which my mom has called me since I was little).” We wonder which one the Prince chooses to go with, or maybe he has his own!

Before Prince Harry There Was Another Man

Meghan is actually a divorcee after marrying producer Trevor Engelson in 2011 and divorcing him in August 2013. Meghan and Trevor started dating in 2004 and later got married in a barefoot ceremony at the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios in 2011. Their marriage was only to last two years before calling it quits. Rumor has it, Engleson is now allegedly producing a British TV show about a divorced woman who marries a British Prince. We wonder where he got that idea for a storyline from?

Her Knight In Shining Armor

It was in 2016 that the union of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry led to a media frenzy of constant speculation before an official statement was released confirming the romance in November. Meghan has since admitted that the actress and her royal beau had been secretly dating for six months before it was revealed to the public. During an interview with Vanity Fair in September 2017, Markle spoke about her relationship for the first time and expressed, “We’re two people who are really happy and in love.”

Enough Is Enough

It was on November 8, 2016, that an official statement was released from the Royal Family’s secretary confirming the couples relationship. The statement was in fact issued due to the “wave of abuse and harassment” directed toward Harry’s “girlfriend.” While the statement confirmed that Markle was, in fact, the Prince’s girlfriend, the message was released to ask the press to “pause and reflect” before issuing their sexist and racist stories on the romance, as they were heavily defamatory towards Markle.

Facing All Types Of Challenges

Dating a guy who is sixth in line to be the King of England is no easy task. Meghan has spoken about her feelings towards her new romance, admitting, “Some days it can feel more challenging than others. And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.” If anyone can do it, Meghan is the woman for the job!

The One Thing She Can’t Live Without

If you were to be asked what is the one thing you can’t live without, you’d probably respond with your favorite food. But not for Meghan. Although a foodie herself, she says the one thing she can’t live without is her passport!  She explained, “I spend almost every week on a plane, and between travel for work, or press, or most importantly for humanitarian work, it is my access to experience this big beautiful world of ours.” We could all only wish to experience the same type of wanderlust.

Friends In High Places

One of Meghan’s close pals is tennis champion Serena Williams. After meeting at a celebrity flag football game, the two powerful women immediately hit it off. Meghan is often seen at Serena’s tennis matches, and after Serena won the U.S. Open title for the third year in a row, Meghan tweeted her support. Markle has since described Williams as a ‘confidante’ and ‘the down to earth chick’ she loves to spend time with. A true friendship right from the beginning!

Mommy’s Girl

Many people question whether her mother, Doria Ragland, is really her biological mother. In an interview with Ebony, Markle said, “My mom is a yoga instructor, 100% Black with dreadlocks. And when people find out ‘that girl’ on Suits is her daughter, there is often this disconnect and sometimes disbelief. It took me a long time to find myself.” Nevertheless, Meghan is very close with her mother, and she allegedly recently took her on a trip to London, no doubt paying someone a very special visit.

She Is Quite The Cook

Before she was being served scones and tea in the royal houses, Meghan proved she could cook up quite a storm. Recipes were a huge feature on her blog, ‘The Tig,’ and her pictures sure looked appetizing. So when she’s not busy portraying the beautiful Rachel Zane on Suits, or traveling the globe for humanitarian work and saving impoverished communities, she’ll be in the kitchen cooking. Her favorite dish to make is roasted chicken, often bringing one with her to dinner-parties that she’s invited to.

Works For What She Believes In

Markle, being a woman of many talents, was the first in her family to graduate. During her senior year, she also worked for the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires. Speaking of her time in the Argentinian capital, she said it “helped my decision to work on women’s political participation and leadership. It’s a space I feel comfortable in and am really excited about the future of.” Since then, she has become an advocate for the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

Hitting The Small Screen

Before Suits, Meghan had smaller television roles. Her first TV role was in 2002 on an episode of the medical drama General Hospital. This was followed by roles in CSIWithout A Trace, and Castle, before starring in three major films: Get Him To The Greek and Remember Me in 2010, and Horrible Bosses in 2011. It was then in 2011 that she got her break-through role in Suits. Markle is passionate about her character, as she believes Rachel Zane is a true “role model” for having such a successful career.

Keeping The Wardrobe Vegan

Roast chicken may be her go-to dish, but when it comes to Meghan’s wardrobe choices, she opts for the vegan type. In an interview with Good Housekeeping, Meghan spoke about her clothing on Suits  –  “My wardrobe for my part in Suits isn’t like Working Girl – dressing for work doesn’t have to be so on-the-nose these days. The key is to have your own point of view attached to it. Personally, I love cropped pants in vegan leather, a great fitted blazer and a button-down [shirt].”

A Bit Of Birthday Love

Before shutting down her blog, Meghan would pen down a letter every year on her birthday for her site. The 36-year-old previously admitted, “My 20s were brutal – a constant battle with myself, judging my weight, my style, my desire to be as cool/as hip/as smart/as “whatever” as everyone else.” She finally felt happy in her 30’s when she turned 34, and a year later she expressed, “I am feeling so incredibly joyful right now, so grateful and content that all I could wish for is more of the same.”

Fashion Guru

A fashion blog called, ‘Meghan’s Mirror,’ was created by Amanda Dishaw and Christine OBrien-Ross as a platform to document every outfit Meghan wears. The blog gives an insight into what the actress was most recently spotted wearing, where she bought it, and where they can get it for themselves. The pair created this blog following their original success with their first blog, ‘What Would Kate Do?’, and knew the market out there was keen to get the fashion insight from the new women in the royal circle.

The Value Of Money

The successful actress was not always so successful in keeping up with her funds. Making the confession in her blog, Markle admittedly discusses her struggles with money before fame, but how she still kept a smile on her face. “It wasn’t long ago (cough – about ten years ago – cough) that I only had $40 in my bank account, that I could barely book an audition, and that my circle of friends was even smaller. But even then, without all the pomp and circumstance, I made time to celebrate my life.”

Your Royal Highness

Without trying to jump to any conclusions, but with their growing love for one another, there is no reason not to suspect Prince Harry may propose to Meghan in the future. If he were to do so, than Markle would become a Duchess of England after they wed. The current titles on offer are Sussex, Clarence, and Buckingham. So watch out, there may just be Duchess Meghan one day. We wonder what will come of Rachel Zane if this was to happen?

Life In Canada

While she hasn’t made the big move across the pond to live in England, she has moved from Los Angeles to Toronto where her show, Suits, is filmed. She is seen to live a low-key life in Canada, but she has had a royal visitor to her house, which is located in a quiet area. Expectedly, this would have caused a bit more chaos than the neighbors are normally used to, but the pair decided to spend their time together indoors the whole time!

To All The Women Out There

Meghan may have been spending her first Valentine’s Day with Prince Harry this past February, but she still took the time to give her own advice to other ladies’ out there by publishing a post called ‘Be Your Own Valentine.’ She wrote: “I think you need to cook that beautiful dinner even when it’s just you, wear your favorite outfit, buy yourself some flowers, and celebrate the self love that often gets muddled when we focus on what we don’t have.”

Not Going Anywhere Anytime Soon

Markle seems like the type of woman who can be at five places at once, constantly achieving greatness and fulfilling her dreams. This seems to have always been the case for Meghan, who states, “I’ve never wanted to be a lady who lunches – I’ve always wanted to be a woman who works.” Luckily, she gets to work in something she loves, and her acting career allegedly began after a manager was handed a recording of one of her college films.
