Country stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have been one of the music industry’s most adorable and longest lasting power couples. 21-years-later they make an announcement no one expected…
Country singing star couple, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, just celebrated their 21 year anniversary; never dull, though! The duo chose to use this occasion to let the world know they are everything but ordinary, and the unexpected news have everything to do with their growing family. Their story started like this…
Fans Didn’t See It Coming
In late 1994, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were introduced at the New Faces Show in Nashville. Faith had just gone through a divorce from Daniel Hill, and McGraw was dating Kristine Donahue. Their backstage interaction might have been brief, but it certainly left a mark with them. Everything they have gone through since then has led up to this recent announcement.
One night after the concert, Tim invited Faith back to his dressing room. The two had developed feelings for one another and it was at this time that they shared their first kiss. Their connection was electric and the couple knew that they wanted to be together. It was at this point that Faith knew she had to do the very difficult thing and call off her engagement so that she could pursue a relationship with Tim.
When Tim and Faith shared the stage together, the chemistry was undeniable. Things got more intense as the tour went on and the country singers couldn’t deny their admiration and attraction to one another. The situation was increasingly complicated as Faith was engaged to be married, but she had a wandering eye. Faith knew she had to make her mind up on things: should she stay with her fiancé or should she explore the connection with Tim?
Falling In Love
After succumbing to their feelings, Tim and Faith embarked on a relationship and fans could not get enough of the country singing power couple. They had an indescribable connection and their romance moved incredibly quickly. In September 1996, after a few months of dating, they made their first official public appearance together at Andre Agassi’s Grand Slam for Children event. It was clear that they were right for each other, but the controversial way they got together led people to judge Hill.
Unapologeticly In Love
When Faith became aware of the negative comments surrounding her love life, she hit back saying “If someone is going to judge my character because I was engaged to somebody and then I left him for somebody else, I can’t control that.” The gorgeous singer added, “But I wasn’t about to let Tim slip through my hands. And I had more self-worth and self-respect to not.” After her assertive comments, the media backed down in shaming the singer for her personal choices.
The Unexpected News
After a whirlwind romance, Faith found out that she was expecting a baby in late 1996. Their new addition came as a surprise to everyone but they were elated nonetheless. Fans became incredibly excited when they graced the red carpets with Faith sporting a visible baby bump. Faith was a glowing mom-to-be but McGraw had intentions to tie the knot before they welcomed their baby. He knew that he wanted to be with Faith forever, she had stolen his heart.
Popping The Question
McGraw recalled the moment he asked Faith to be his wife. He said, “it was raining and stuff and we’d been on tour for a while together, and I joked around with her about getting married. And so I said… I looked at her, grabbed her by the hand, and dropped forward onstage. She had already done her show. And I said, ‘I’m really serious. I want you to marry me.” When McGraw got off stage, Hill was waiting and had written Yes! on a mirror.
Hill and McGraw were amongst the first celebrity couples to pull off a surprise wedding. They told family and friends to come over for a game of softball and a concert in McGraw’s hometown of Rayville, Louisana, but once guests turned up, they realized it was an official ceremony. At three months pregnant, Faith wore a stunning simple white dress and went barefoot while Tim wore jeans topped with a black coat. They said their “I do’s” under an oak tree.
In early 1997, Hill and McGraw made one of their first public appearances as a married couple at the American Music Awards. At this point, Faith was well into her pregnancy and showed off a sizable bump in a chic white baby doll dress on the arm of her new husband. Tim and Faith looked more in love than ever and their family was about to be extended. Time didn’t matter and it was clear how much the two were in love.
Green Eyed Girlfriend
Looking back on where it all began with Faith, Tim added that a rather uncomfortable encounter happened with his girlfriend once he had seen Faith in the flesh. He admitted,”For me, there was an intense physical attraction. I guess my girlfriend saw it in my eyes. She said, ‘I don’t want you around her.'” Unfortunately for Tim’s ex, she was right to have her suspicions about the two and she was the one who was about to get dumped.
Baby On Board
After many public appearances with a sizable bump, fans couldn’t wait to get a glimpse of the country couple’s first child. In May 1997, the couple welcomed their first daughter named Gracie Katherine. Faith took some time away from the spotlight and her career to focus on her family, but it was not long before the couple ended up conceiving again. Their family was expanding fast, leading Tim and Faith to appear stronger than ever before.
What Happens On Tour…
As it turns out, Faith and Tim’s love did not stop on stage and at home. They seemed to spend all of their time together backstage too. In fact, the couple decided to name their joint tour bus the love bus as Hill revealed that “a lot goes on in that bus.” In contrast to many other stars taking advantage of their name and having flings with groupies, the two stars remained loyal throughout their relationship.
It was clear that Faith took to being a mother immediately. Her family became her number one priority and she constantly gushed about them in interviews. She even admitted that it was becoming a fear of hers to be without them. She said, “I can’t even say what my greatest fear is because I, I can’t even imagine. Being without my family … I can’t even say it because it makes me cry.” Their second daughter Maggie Elizabeth was born in 1998 and their family was complete.
Making Sweet Music
Faith took three years away from recording to give herself a break after four years of touring, and to focus on raising her young children. However, when she did return to recording, she did it in the best way possible and joined forces with her husband for a duet. The single was titled “It’s Your Love” and it became an instant hit. While Tim and Faith were both successful, the popularity of their duet paved the way for the couple to team up again.
Although Tim often used Faith for inspiration for his music, he noted the shift that happened once he started a family. He stated,”It gives everything a focus,” adding, “You feel like you got your arms around everything, and you know where your life’s headed.” His emotional admission hit home with so many and he finally admitted,”You just find a peace you never had before.” It was evident that both Faith and Tim found themselves when they started having children.
Award Winning Couple
“It’s your love” stayed in the number one spot for six weeks and won an award at the Academy of Country Music Awards. The duet was particularly poignant for the married couple and Faith added that when they perform it live, “it [doesn’t] feel like anybody else was really watching.” The love between the couple was evident and they revealed that they pledged to never be apart from more than three consecutive days from the beginning of their marriage.
In 1998, Faith decided to resume her career, titling her new album with her own name. The album showcased her wide range of vocals and shifted towards a more pop-orientated sound. Nevertheless, Faith included her husband on her record and released duets including, “Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me,” “Let Me Let Go,” and “The Secret of Life,” which ended up being fan favorites. The couple’s popularity led them to excite fans and announce they would tour together.
Expanding The Brood
By 1999, Faith and Tim already had two beautiful daughters together and many believed that their schedules would halt them from having more children. However, the couple had other ideas and Tim stated “Ideally, we’d love five kids.” When pushed on his statement and questioned if it was a boy he was longing for, he replied “I always wanted boys, but in a way I want it to stay this way. Just keep having girls. That way I’ll always dress good.”
Together We Tour
In 2000, Faith and Tim embarked on their first smash hit co-headlining tour, Soul2Soul, with their daughter in tow. The decision to tour together was both financially rewarding and a preference of the couple as they could spend every day together. It appeared that Tim and Faith never left the honeymoon phase, and favor being together all the time over having their own personal space. Despite their evident love, they were still subjected to split rumors in the tabloids.
Hitting Back At Rumors
When all of the rocky marriage rumors hit the press, Faith did not stay silent when asked about them. She said, “I’ve had an affair with my makeup artist, a female; an affair with my hairstylist; my marriage is on the rocks; Maggie is not Tim’s child, the naysayers. I don’t need their approval. I have too much going on. If that’s their entertainment, fine.” Almost every celebrity couple was subjected with split speculation but Faith and Tim insisted that it didn’t affect them.
In any interview on red carpets, the loving couple couldn’t help but gush about the other. In 2000, Faith admitted that Tim had given her much more than his love. She added, “Tim has given me confidence and strength and my foundation. He makes me feel like I can conquer the world.” In 2001, the couple decided to add one more to their family and they welcomed their daughter Audrey. For years after, it seemed like nothing could go wrong, but then Tim hit a roadblock.
Teaming Up On Tour
Two years later in the spring of 1996, McGraw and Hill embarked on a joint tour, appropriately title ‘Spontaneous Combustion.’ At this time, McGraw had just called off his engagement from Kristine Donahue, but Hill has just become engaged to record producer Scott Hendricks. It seemed that the stars weren’t aligning for the two country singers and their respective relationships were keeping them from getting together. However, everything changed when they took to the stage on the first night of tour.
It is no secret that Tim discovered that his father was Tug McGraw after finding his birth certificate but it wasn’t something he dealt with until he met Faith. He said “I knew I had that instability and dysfunction in me, from the way I grew up. And when I met Faith, I knew I needed her in my life–to keep me stable, solid and on track.” It was not the only thing that Faith saved Tim from…
After their wedding, Tim gave insight into their mutual feelings for each other that was nothing like either one of them had felt before. McGraw added “I mean I think we had a pretty instant knowledge that we were going to be together forever.” The industry has shown that the vast majority of celebrity couples do not last but Faith and Tim seemed like something special and in later years, they proved that they would in fact make it last.
He Never Knew
Frank “Tug” McGraw was the father of Tim and a past Major League Baseball, relief pitcher. Tug was often associated with his catchphrase, “Ya Gotta Believe” which became a favorite rallying cheer for the New York Mets. Tug had a brief fling with Betty D’Agostino in ’66, which resulted in the birth of country music singer Tim McGraw. Tug’s biography titled “Ya Gotta Believe” explained that he was never given a chance to father Tim since D’Agostino broke off all contact with him and fled without letting him know she was pregnant.
Wouldn’t Recognize Him
It was not until Tim turned 17 that his father was willing to recognize him as his son. In spite of the fact he did not acknowledge Tim until he was older, Tug did manage to develop a close relationship with the country singer from then onwards. When Tim found out that his stepfather was not his biological one, the boy was already 11 years old, so it is safe to say he had some mental and emotional adjustments to go through before being able to connect with his birth father, too.
A Man Now
Tim’s mother Betty married in Lousiana and so Tim grew up believing that his stepdad was his real father. They all lived in the humble town of Start, but when Betty and Tim’s stepfather divorced, Tim was told the truth. As for why the two waited until Tim was older to establish a real connection, Tim told Country Weekly: “I felt like I was a man now and I needed to face him and try to work things out. Plus, it just was the right time to pursue it, to ask some questions.”
But Tim didn’t just gain a father – he was granted siblings by this renewal of kinship, too. Tug had a son named Mark and a daughter called Carie from his first wife Phyllis Kline, as well as a son, Matthew, from his wife Diane Hovenkamp-Robertson – and two stepsons called Christopher and Ian Hovenkamp. However, it wasn’t until years later, when Tim McGraw lost his father to a brain tumor which was initially supposed to be fully removed during surgery, that Tim realized how much Faith was his rock.
She Was His Rock
“Timmy has a passion for what he’s doing, he has a passion for life,” Tug said in an interview the two McGraws gave in honor of Father’s Day. “When it came to my baseball career, I was really into the intricacies of baseball, trying to take it to an art form and I see Timmy doing that with his music. He’s very particular in his choice of music. I have tremendous admiration for him.” When Tug passed away, Tim had no one support him as Faith did.
Standing Up For Faith
It is no secret that Tim McGraw is Faith Hill’s biggest fan so when it came to other people putting her down, her husband was the first person to defend her and hit back. Tim stated “Critics who attack my wife bug me.” He added, “It makes me want to pay ’em a visit so I could give ’em a good punch in the nose.” Pretty sure people shouldn’t speak badly about Faith, you’ll have Tim to answer to.
It is no secret that Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are an extremely patriotic couple and uphold the values of the United States, especially when it comes to respecting the armed forces. In 2003, at the Army post in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Hill and McGraw joined forced to sing to the military crowd and not only did they speak highly of the troops, Tim also said of his wife,”Faith is just cool, she’s really a smart, smart lady that has got everything together and knows her priorities.”
In 2008, Tim admitted that he could not get on stage with having a drink or two. The habit later became his crutch and spiraled out of control. Speaking of his decision to kick the addiction with the help and support of his wife, Tim stated “Faith saved my life in a lot of ways—from myself more than anything. I can go down a dark road sometimes, when you’re not feeling good about yourself, and she pulls me out. My wife makes me a better man.”
However, although Tim noted that Faith was incredibly supportive throughout his battle with addiction, it was reported that she did give him an ultimatum. Faith allegedly told Tim to clean up his act or if he didn’t, he would lose her and their daughters Gracie, Maggie Elizabeth, and Audrey. Tim had to make everything work out in order to keep his family together and he decided to get sober. McGraw went on to lose forty pounds and began training with a martial arts master.
Talking It Out
Faith and Tim proved that their love and appreciation for one another had never once dwindled in the years they had been together. Tim revealed that their love goes deep and they constantly express themselves. He said of Faith “She would be perfectly happy if I told her, ‘Let’s get in the car and ride for two hours and talk.’ That would be as big a gift to her as anything.” Couples that communicate are always the ones that go the distance.
Back On Top
It is almost unheard of in the music industry that a couple will stick out their marriage and both have successful careers, but it appeared that McGraw and Hill managed it. In 2009, McGraw appeared in the Oscar nominated film The Blind Side starring opposite Sandra Bullock while in 2010, Faith had contributed to the film Country Strong official soundtrack. At both of their big events, Faith and Tim walked the red carpet and stood by their other half throughout.
As it turns out, McGraw’s role in The Blind Side came from a particularly poignant place as he gravitated towards playing fatherly roles. He said “I’m very family-oriented. I’ve always been family-oriented. I came from a disoriented, dysfunctional family growing up. That probably instilled in me the need and want to have a strong family and a great foundation. That’s something I naturally gravitate towards.” Tim’s performance in the film was outstanding and it appears he connected wholeheartedly with the role.
Inspiring One Another
Not only did Faith assert that her husband was her rock, she also noted that he is her biggest inspiration, saying “Tim inspires me every day in many, many ways.” She added that “I draw inspiration from his assertiveness and from watching him being a father and a husband.” The couple proved that they would be together through thick and thin, showing it was one of the few showbiz marriages that would last, but of course they had their critics.
When McGraw’s album Two Lanes of Freedom was released in 2013, the attention quickly turned to his relationship with Faith. Hill spoke of them saying that the rumors “seem to be running like crazy right now for some reason. It’s perplexing. I don’t know why ‘happy’ can’t be a story.” In addition, Tim was equally frustrated and added, “We’ve been married 17 years, and since the first week we were married those things were out, we don’t even think about it.”
Any parent that has dropped their child off at college will know that awful feeling of detachment. Tim and Faith felt this for the first time when daughter Maggie went to college. Tim said “It’s beautiful and it’s sad all at one time, you know, you can’t wait for them to sort of see what they make of themselves and do with themselves when they get out from under your umbrella, but you’re also nervous and sad because you’re gonna miss ’em.”
In an interview with Oprah, McGraw teared up talking about his relationship saying that behind all the fame, “we close our door at home we are husband and wife and a mother and a father.” Tim also spoke of his admiration for Faith, stating “I think about the fact that we’re married and the fact that we raised these three beautiful daughters. And then I think about having three daughters and having [Hill] for their mom. It’s a pretty cool thing for those girls to have her.”
It was revealed in 2013 that Hill’s brother Zachary White was an addict and went down a seriously dark path. However, White later credited Faith and Tim for getting him back on track and turning his life around. He said “I made my share of mistakes in the past, but Faith showed me that I could be a better person, I turned my life around, and I owe much of that to Faith and Tim. If it weren’t for them, there’s no telling where I’d be now.”
With two musically gifted parents, it is no surprise that Tim and Faith’s daughters inherited musical genes. Faith explained her struggle of letting her kids grow up and venture out. She said “The one thing we stress is that you don’t get things handed to you on a silver platter — you have to work for the things you want, they know it takes hard work.” She finally added, “As a parent, you don’t want to stand in the way of their dreams.”
A New Duet
While Faith and Tim’s loving duets drew in huge success and popularity, in 2015 , Tim decided to team up with someone else for a duet. On one night of his tour, Tim called upon his 18-year-old daughter Gracie to join him on stage and perform “Here Tonight.” The daddy-daughter duet was a big milestone for the McGraw family and Faith seeing her husband and daughter singing harmoniously left her bursting with pride. Faith couldn’t help but get on stage with her husband too.
Enjoying The Moment
Despite having performed together for over 20 years, McGraw confessed that he is still in awe of his beautiful and talented wife. He expressed, “It amazes me every night, every chance I get to sing with her.” However, the country star added that his nerves often get the better of him when he sees Faith performing on stage, explaining, “When you see somebody you love up there, it’s a lot more.” The empathy that McGraw felt for his wife was heartwarming.
Keeping The Family Together
Faith has regularly stated her commitment to her family and her values did not go unnoticed by Tim. He lovingly stated, “She’s the light of our whole family’s life. She keeps everything going for us. We all strive to be like my wife, everybody in our family. If your wife holds the example for everybody in your family, that’s a good thing.” Not only that, but Tim couldn’t help but be in awe of his wife’s beauty, sweetly adding, “My hot wife, man.”
Meet The Parents
Tim revealed that when he met his daughter’s new boyfriend, he might have frightened him off. He recalled, “We’re doing a barbecue, so I’m in the kitchen and I forget that he’s coming. I have a white apron on and a knife and I’m trimming meat up, so I’ve got chunks of meat all over this white apron, blood everywhere.” When Gracie’s boyfriend arrived, he was greeted by the country singer holding a knife and covered in blood!
Pushing Each Other’s Buttons
Despite their marriage looking perfect from the outside, the country couple were revealing in their duet lyrics as they sang, “I know that sometimes you hate me/We spend most of our days together with you trying to change me.” Fans were surprised to hear that even the strongest of power couples still have their issues and Faith even added, “I like a good fight, I know how to press those buttons. And if I’m a little angry, I can press those buttons big time.”
Fighting With Faith
Every couple argues and it seems that Tim and Faith are no different. However, instead of having big arguments about important things, Tim revealed that their arguments are hard to come by but when it does happen it is something rather minor. The country singer revealed “I think the last thing we got, I didn’t load the dishwasher or something.” In the scheme of things, they must be exceptionally in love to let a lot of things go. Chores arguments are a walk in the park!
In 2017, many people began to notice Faith’s shrinking figure, especially when she was performing on stage. Doctors weighed in on her appearance and suspected that her hectic touring lifestyle, heart problems and severe dehydration were all factors which were contributing to her alleged deteriorating health. However, people close to the star hit back at the claims of her unhealthy lifestyle and said that her busy schedule sometimes forces her to forgo meals and in addition, she has been working out a lot more.
The Best Memories
Despite being together for over two decades, Faith and Tim have managed to keep the fire alive when it comes to their love for one another and performing together. Tim said,”The memories we have created every time we have gone out have been the best memories of our career, and we have two kids in college, what else are we gonna do?” It is heartwarming to hear that the two still appreciate their joint performances and serenading one another.
Making It Last
When the couple recently promoted their joint album The Rest Of Our Life, they were asked what makes their marriage work and keeps the love alive. McGraw jokingly said “Well, she tolerates a lot, I think that’s probably the main reason.” Hill laughed and replied to her husband, “You tolerate a lot too. I’m not the easiest person.” However, the beautiful singer did reveal one of their biggest secrets to their 21-year marriage. Faith insisted, “We do actually like one another.”
In late November 2017, Faith and Tim proved that they still knew how to make a hit as their joint debut album debuted at number one on the Top Country Albums chart. It was the long-term couples first collaborative LP, entitled The Rest of Our Life, and they were incredibly grateful, stating “We are especially grateful for our amazing fans and the talented folks who worked on the album with us, we are blessed to get to do this and, even more so, together.”
Return To Tour
In 2017, after many years performing apart, Faith and Tim announced they would be collaborating on tour once again for their second Soul2Soul tour. They were both incredibly excited about the reunion and McGraw gushed of Faith’s talent, “when I’m on stage with her, it’s like NASCAR trying to keep up with an Indy car. She’s just that good. So, to watch her sing and see what she does is pretty inspiring.” This is one country fairytale that looks to live happily ever after.
