For most of us, it takes many many years before we start to see white hairs appear. The majority of human beings have the privilege of growing up with a head full of colored hair. Ultimately, Most people end up being blonde, brown or ginger.

Lo And Behold

Baby boy Bence Csinesa had a completely different situation. The Hungarian newborn was born in Székesfehérvár, Hungary and has a distinctive feature that you may have never seen before. He has a full head of white hair.

In The Beginning

A young lady from Hungary gave birth to her beautiful baby Bence in a hospital in Székesfehérvár, not too far from the country’s capital, Budapest. Thankfully for the family, the baby was born in safe and stress free circumstances. His arrival was as expected and his mother had a painless pregnancy. However, when he arrived into the world, the doctors saw that he wasn’t an ordinary baby. It was impossible to miss the elephant in the room…

Early Days

Besides this unique feature, Bence was a typical baby who had a healthy infancy. At birth, he weighed slightly above the average, at 12 pounds. But at 21 inches, he had a pretty standard height for a baby. Normally speaking, babies are born with little to no hair. It’s certainly strange if a baby has a full head of hair just after being born, but for a newborn baby to have a full head of white hair is nothing short of amazing.

Health Checks

Astounded by what they saw, doctors could not fathom why Bence’s hair would be the color it was. What did it mean? Even after taking all the necessary health checks, his results were completely fine. And upon appearance, doctors believed that Bence was as healthy as any of the others in the delivery room. The mystery remained, why did Bence have white hair? Did it mean that he was an albino baby? Soon, the truth would reveal itself.

The Mystery Of Albinism

The world is an amazing place, where babies of all different shapes, sizes and colors are born every single day. Despite their fragile dispositions, every baby is a unique specimen. But about five in every 100,000 babies have some form of albinism. Despite being well documented and known for a long period of human history, albinism is still shrouded in mystery and it doesn’t help that the many forms of it over-complicate the very essence of the condition.

baby 25

Endless Research

This hasn’t stopped scientists from spending their entire lives trying to find out the secrets of this peculiar condition. One of the most important findings of albinism is the fact that virtually anybody can be born with it. It’s a skin condition that can apply to people of all races, ages and genders. Also, the biggest factor that comes in to play when albinism is concerned is the amount of melanin one has. It can affect the colors of skin, eyes and hair.

baby 26

Terms And Conditions

Despite affecting people for their entire lives, albinism does not inflict harm on those people who do have it. One of the most significant medical hindrances that albinos may experience is related to their vision. This means that albinos are more likely to require eye tests and are required to be more cautious when they are out in the sun. And although most cases of it arrive when a baby is newly born, albinism can also be found later on in life.

baby 27

A Potential Albino

The possibility of Bence having albinism seemed to be the most likely case as far as the doctors were concerned. But what exactly is albinism? The technical answer is that it is a medical condition where the body is prevented from producing normal levels of melanin. As a result, the condition can pave the way for pale skin, white hair and even red eyes. Despite the condition affecting many people, it is not purely restricted to humans…

All Animals

Albinism is a condition that affects virtually all corners of the animal kingdom. Some of the animals that have the highest rates of albinism include rats, mice, guinea-pigs and rabbits. And it is believed that albinism can occur due to a variety of reasons such as mutation, inheritance, evolution, illness and even aging. And believe it or not, albinism can also affect plants. It interferes with photosynthesis, which limits a plant’s chances of survival. Now back to the case in point…

Time To Take Action

At any rate, even if Bence would not be diagnosed as albino, the doctors agreed on one thing – the baby had a serious pigmentation deficiency. The doctors knew that they had to get to the bottom of this mystery as it was a case that they had never personally tackled. In order to deduce the most reliable results, they decided to give Bence a blood test. This would indicate whether the baby had high or low levels of melanin.

baby 1

Results Are In

The doctor who officiated the tests was Dr. Zoltan Kummer. After receiving the results of Bence’s blood test, Dr. Kummer finally had the answers he was looking for. The tests suggested that Bence’s low level of melanin was without a shadow of a doubt, the main catalyst for his white hair. But surely this would mean that Bence’s skin would be lighter as well. Something wasn’t adding up for the doctors. Why did it only affect Bence’s hair?

baby 4

“Or Could It Be…”

Other doctors working in the same hospital had differing theories surrounding the little white-haired baby. While some believed that an illness could have been the cause of it, others thought that maybe Bence’s mother had experienced prenatal stress. Many babies have a greater chance of being anxious if their mothers were stressed while carrying them. Prenatal stress can also be the cause of infections, lightweight births and even premature births. Thankfully, Bence’s mother had not been stressed while he was in the womb.

baby 5

Prince Charming

Even though Bence’s condition bewildered the medical team with his white locks, he has warmed the hearts of all the staff at the hospital, both doctors and nurses alike. They think he is the cutest baby to be brought into the world through their hospital and even gave him a nickname, “Prince Charming.” But Dr. Kummer believes that the “awes” will subside once Bence’s hair gets darker. He thinks that the low level of melanin may only be located in his hair and could be temporary.

baby 6

Viral Sensation

Bence’s beautiful hair didn’t only capture the attention of the medical staff. It quickly spread to the four corners of the globe via the internet. It seemed like anyone and everyone who spotted the baby on social media had something to say about his appearance and his potential condition. Many disagreed with Kummer’s predictions, believing that his white hair is here to stay and is the early stage of albinism. At any rate, Bence became an internet celebrity.

baby 7

An Online Debate

One example of an online commenter who had a differing opinion to Dr. Kummer used their own experience to back up their points. “It can be under diagnosed. One of my grandchildren has yellow albinism,” they said. “It was brought to our attention by the eye doctor when he was 2. He is now 12 and is considered legally blind,” said one commenter on social media.” But this commenter wasn’t the only person to give Kummer a piece of their mind.

baby 8

Wait, There’s Another One

The comments didn’t stop there and many people voiced similar sentiments, using their own experiences of parenting a kid who had some form of albinism. “My daughter was born with hair like that,” a commenter said. She happened to be the mother of an albino child. The mother went on to say that “She has dirty blonde hair now and some pigment but she has albinism.” Dr. Kummer just couldn’t seem to avoid the online backlash.

baby 9

Worldwide Discussion

Time went on and Bence’s case got more attention. The baby began to gain more attention in the medical community. Doctors around continued to speculate what the most defining cause was behind white hair in babies. Genetics was often the most popular theory, but there were also large swathes of the medical world who believed that the truth could be found in a deficiency in vitamin B12. But ultimately, no signs of albinism could be found in Bence’s results.

baby 10

Other Cases

Sadly, poor vision and skin deficiencies are serious problems that affect many people with albinism later in their lives. And although it is hard to tell yet, we can not rule out that baby Bence has a chance of facing such issues as he gets older. But Bence is not the only baby who has a peculiar loss of pigment. A story about a girl who was born with a white patch in her black hair surfaced recently.

baby 22

Introducing MilliAnna

This particular girl who was born in 2016, went by the name of MilliAnna. Similar to Bence, she was blessed with a full head of hair from day one. But there was one big difference between the two babies. For the most part, MilliAnna was born with black curly hair, but she has a small white streak planted in the middle of her head. What could this mean exactly? Is it the same reason that Bence has white hair?

baby 11

The Truth

One thing is for sure though, there was a reason as to why part of MilliAnna’s hair was white. She had a lack of pigment in that part of her hair. And her mother has joked in the past about MilliAnna’s appearance, comparing her baby girl to the Disney villain Cruella de Vil. Whether this is due to their uncanny resemblance or her daughter’s naughty behavior is unclear. But at any rate, MilliAnna’s mother loves her very much.

baby 12

A Twist In The Tale

But there was one detail that helped the condition make so much more sense. As far as MilliAnna was concerned, her white streak wasn’t just a fluke. She actually got it from her mother. Her condition was completely genetic. This meant that many of the women in MilliAnna’s family had exactly the same thing: a white patch in their black curly hair from birth. But it wasn’t just a random genetic detail. There was more to it.

baby 13

The Condition

So, like her mother and her grandmother, MilliAnna has a condition call poliosis. This meant that she was born with a pigment-free patch of skin in the middle of her head, making the hair in that area white. Typically, someone with poliosis has less melanin in certain sections of hair, this affects the hair follicles in these specific parts of the head. Certain celebrities such as Dickie Davis and Sam Brown have been recognized for having this feature.

baby 14

A Proud Family

What’s amazing about the condition is that MilliAnna, her mother, grandmother and even her great-grandmother have the same condition. For the good part of the last century, someone in their family has rocked the white streak, and the tradition has potentially spanned many generations. Also, the four generations refuse to hide their white patch. They are extremely proud of the way they look and the best part is that they have each other to relate to and take inspiration from each other.

baby 15

Looking Ahead To The Future

After many generations of maintaining the same appearance, who knows what the future might hold. But there is a strong chance that if MilliAnna is to have children when she’s older, they will also be born with the full head of black curly hair and the white streak. Now that we have covered the intricacies behind MilliAnna’s condition, let’s get back on track and try and solve the mystery of Bence’s full head of white hair.

baby 16

Hair Growth

Let’s take a step back and put the magnifying glass over Bence once again. What confused his family wasn’t necessarily the fact that he had a full head of hair. It was more to do with the color of hair he was born with. Genetics have a massive impact on how a baby’s hair grows and when it starts to grow. So as far as Bence was concerned, he had a family with no problems when it came to hair growth.

baby 17

Making The Abnormal Normal

Despite obvious concerns that parents may have when they find out their baby was born with a full head of hair, doctors don’t think there is any problem with babies like Bence. In the medical world, lots of hair from birth isn’t considered a unique occurrence and doctors even recommend parents to take photos of their children while their hair is so thick. But one quirk that is not so normal is when babies are born with teeth.

baby 18

Figures Prove It

Statistically speaking, between two and three thousand babies have at least a couple of teeth straight after being born every single year. And studies don’t only have the figures to prove it. There are also specific case studies and stories that detail these types of occurrences. Take this incident in 2015 for example, when a baby was born by the name of Alyssa Bailey. The tiny tot arrived into the world with two bottom front dentures. Truly amazing.

baby 19

Beautiful Babies

What studies about albinism clearly show is that babies are some of the most interesting specimens in the world. They are at their purest, most vulnerable and have so many changes happening in such a short space of time. They can be born with the most intriguing features such as white hair, white streaks of hair and ever teeth. But nevertheless, doctors are still struggling to find the answers to many of these medical questions.

What About Baby Bence?

As of today, the general consensus amongst the medical world is that Bence is going through a brief transitional phase. Whatever is going on with Bence’s gorgeous hair, doctors believe that it is temporary. The pigment shortage that the Hungarian baby is facing will not last forever. On the contrary, it is predicted that Bence should start to grow darker hair within a few years time. The more he grows, the darker he will get.

baby 151

Bright Future For Bence

It seems like babies like Bence still have a long way to go before they will find out exactly what’s going on with their unpredictable hair colors. When all is said and done, we can only hope that baby Bence’s beautiful white hair is a result of good genetics rather than some form of illness. If all goes to plan, Prince Charming will grow into quite a handsome young man and wow the world with his gorgeous locks.
