9-year-old Dane Miller’s soulful singing abilities went viral after his aunt posted a video of her special needs nephew singing the ’93 Whitney Houston hit I Have Nothing.
Down syndrome is noticeably not going to get in the way of young Dane and his deep passion for anything Whitney-related, evident ever since he watched a documentary about the only artist who ever charted seven consecutive number one Billboard Hot 100 songs – the great Whitney Houston.
Dane’s aunt Jeanne, originally from Prosper, Texas, posted the video on her social media account on Facebook, and it has been viewed more than 18 million times since then.
In her caption, Jeanne wrote: “Is this boy not the sweetest thing ever?! He loves to sing. Whitney would be proud.”
Apparently, it was Dane’s 13-year-old brother, Dawson, who introduced Dane to the whole genre. Once exposed, Dane revealed an entirely different side of him, listening to musicians like Taylor Swift, Kidz Bop Kids and more.
“He is just very vibrant,” Dane’s aunt told ABC News. “He’s very high-functioning so if he hears music, it’s just something that sticks with him. He’s very proud [of the video]. He just smiles and giggles.”
Dane’s mother, Danna Miller, explained her husband and herself were not anticipating having a special needs child but learned how to deal with the circumstances:
“When we had Dane, we didn’t know that he had Down syndrome, but it wouldn’t have mattered,” Danna Miller said. “He has been probably the biggest blessing of our lives. He is just so loving and joyful. He is what’s good about this world.”
As for the way people have responded, Danna had the biggest smile on her face as she elaborated:
“It’s crazy, exciting and stressful all at the same time because my phone has been blowing up all day,” she added. “I go and read the comments and they’re just so sweet.
Here’s hoping we will hear a lot more from this great Dane – and soon.
